Jackson Sanatorium

Known as the “Castle on the Hill,” Jackson Sanatorium doesn’t have the dark history of some places on this list. Originally opened as Our Home on the Hillside, the owners built cottages and a recreation center for individuals with developmental delays or ‘nervous disorders.’ The buildings were steam heated and residents were provided a diet of fruits, vegetables, and grains. The site would be renamed the Jackson Sanatorium, then the Jackson Health Resort, and finally Physical Culture Hotel.
